OIL PULLING: An Introduction

Today I am beginning a series on oil pulling, which is cheaper than a multivitamin and could quite possibly be your cure to a variety of illnesses ranging from heart disease and digestive troubles to hormonal disorders.  Traditionally unrefined sunflower or sesame oil was used for oil pulling, but today many other oils are used as well. Unrefined olive or coconut oil come highly recommended if you don’t want to use the traditional oils.  My preference is coconut oil due to the health benefits to the skin, mucosal linings and antimicrobial effects plus a few more reasons to be discussed later.   Oil pulling traces it roots to oil gargling practiced in Ayurvedic medicine, which dates back thousands of years.  A simple definition to “Ayurveda” is that is it a holistic system of medicine from India. The aim is to provide guidance regarding food and lifestyle so that healthy people can stay healthy and people with health challenges can improve their health.


Oil pulling as we know it today, was introduced in 1992 by Dr. F. Karach, MD. When Dr Karach examined the gargled milk-white oil under a microscope with 600 magnification, he saw live organisms swimming in it. It’s poisonous, so never swallow it. These poisons are bacteria-embryos, which, if not eliminated, cause diseases.  


The most obvious result of oil pulling is improved dental health. Teeth become whiter, gums pinker and healthier looking, and breath fresher. That alone makes it worthwhile. What is really remarkable is that the health benefits don’t stop there. Many health problems, including those which medical science has yet to find cures for, are also improved or completely cured. Oil pulling has the potential to help with just about any illness or chronic condition.

How to Oil Pull

In the morning, before breakfast on an empty stomach you take one tablespoon in the mouth but do not swallow it. Move Oil Slowly in the mouth as rinsing or swishing and Dr Karach puts it as ‘ sip, suck and pull through the teeth’ for fifteen to twenty minutes. This process makes oil thoroughly mixed with saliva. Swishing activates the enzymes and the enzymes draw toxins out of the blood. The oil must not be swallowed, for it has become toxic. As the process continues, the oil gets thinner and white. If the oil is still yellow, it has not been pulled long enough. It is then spit from the mouth , the oral cavity must be thoroughly rinsed and mouth must be washed thoroughly.  Use warm salt water to rinse.  


*The oil pulling /swishing is done best before breakfast. To accelerate the healing process, it can be repeated three times a day, but always before meals on an empty stomach.*
